Henry Petroski is a professor of engineering and of history at Duke University. He has written a number of books on the history of everyday objects, among them The Pencil, The Evolution of Useful Things, The Book on the Bookshelf, The Toothpick, and The House with Sixteen Handmade Doors. His most recent book is The Road Taken: The History and Future of America’s Infrastructure.  His books have been translated into over a dozen languages, and he lectures nationally and internationally on topics small and large.

Richard Smith has lectured on and written about antebellum United States and 19th-century American literature since 1999. He has worked as a public historian in Concord, Massachusetts for 21 years, specializing in Henry David Thoreau, the Transcendentalists, the Anti-Slavery movement and the Civil War. He has written five books for Applewood Books.
